The second of two men who were stabbed in a waterfront parking lot after an early-morning boat cruise has died, said one of the event's promoters. The dispute started shortly before 2:30 a.m., between several people who were leaving a boat cruise that landed on Polson Pier, an industrial area on the eastern side of the harbour.
During the fight, two men were stabbed in a parking lot at Cherry and Commissioners Sts. They were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A 27-year-old man died within hours. Witnesses told reporters he had been trying to break up a fight.
The second man, 24, succumbed to his injuries early Sunday evening, said Leon Foyle, who helped promote the party on the boat.
Police are having trouble determining what happened, since most of the people who might have witnessed the fight left the scene before officers could interview them.
"We're looking for witnesses," said Det. Sgt. Dan Sheppard of the homicide squad. "There were 200 people on the cruise, but very few stuck around."
A bystander at the scene told reporters that the man who died was trying to stop a fight between others, but Sheppard said police hadn't been told this.
"They talked to the TV station but not to the police," he said.
Police originally said they were looking for three black male suspects, but Sheppard said they don't know how many people were involved in the fight.
Despite earlier reports that the fight happened outside the nearby Sound Academy nightclub, Sheppard said the bar was not involved.
Anyone who witnessed the stabbing or who can help them find the men is asked to call them at 416-808-7400.
